Juan Martin del Potro has committed to play the Malaysia Open, Kuala Lumpur, and will be joined at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament this September by fellow Top 10 stars Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic.

The Argentine, who stepped back out on the court last week for the first time since undergoing wrist surgery in March, will be making his Kuala Lumpur debut.

Nishikori, the second player from Asia to break into the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Rankings, reached the Kuala Lumpur semi-finals in 2011 and ’12, both times losing to the eventual champion. The Japanese star is currently working with the most successful player of Asian descent, Michael Chang.

“I always love to come back to Malaysia,” he said. “They have a great stadium, good crowd and good food at the lounge, too. I’ve not won the tournament, so it‘s going to be my goal to win it. Hopefully I can do well at Malaysia this year.

“I hope I can do well in KL, especially in front of Michael who had so much success in Asia, and I hope a lot of the crowds come out to support me. Hopefully it is going to be a great tournament (for me).”

Raonic will make his first visit to Kuala Lumpur since 2010, when he came through the qualifying stages to win his first tour-level match and reach the quarter-finals.

“There are a lot of good memories for me there and to be coming back is very exciting and I hope to make a lot more of those memories,” said the Canadian. “I’m excited to come back to Malaysia; those were great experiences in 2010 and it sort of led to all the things that happened for me in 2011 as far as my breakthrough.

“I do enjoy playing indoors. It’s where I’ve had probably my best results, with most of my titles coming indoors. I do get excited and it is a reason why I chose to play the event, and I feel like it just suits my game.”

The Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur, will be played on indoor hard-courts at Putra Stadium from 22-28 September.
