James Blake set a second-round clash with fellow American Andy Roddick after defeating Spaniard Albert Ramos 6-4, 6-3 on opening Sunday at the Winston-Salem Open. Roddick leads Blake 8-3 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, including a win in their most recent encounter at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open.

After an 0-6 start to the season, former World No. 4 Blake has now reached the second round in four of his past five tournaments, highlighted by a quarter-final result in Washington, D.C. (l. to Dolgopolov).

American Ryan Harrison also advanced, rallying from an 0-3 deficit in the second set to beat Japan's Go Soeda 6-3, 7-5 in one hour and 24 minutes. The 20-year-old Harrison snapped a four-match losing streak and improved to a 22-20 season mark.

A pair of Belgians, Steve Darcis and David Goffin, kicked off proceedings at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament with straight-sets wins Sunday.

The 77th-ranked Darcis brushed aside countryman Xavier Malisse 6-3, 6-0 in 58 minutes, winning 89 per cent of points behind his first serve. Goffin, 21, posted his first match win since a third-round showing at Wimbledon as he defeated Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 7-6(3), 6-1. Mahut was unable to capitalise on his 10 break points in the opening set.

Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr. went four for four on his break points to secure a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri. Bogomolov, who lost to Roger Federer in the Cincinnati second round last week, next faces No. 2 seed Tomas Berdych.
