• The entire third round of the Rogers Cup takes place Thursday, with 16 ATP World Tour stars all going for eight quarter-final berths at the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 stop of the summer. There are three seeds left in the top half of the draw and all eight remain in the bottom half.
• First up on Stadium is No. 5 seed Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia against No. 10 seed Marin Cilic of Croatia. It was at the Rogers Cup a year ago where Tipsarevic took his career to another level, reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final and subsequently breaking into the Top 20 for the first time; since then he has broken the Top 10 and gotten to another Masters 1000 semi-final (in Madrid earlier this year); but Cilic could be trouble - the big-hitting Croat has won six of their seven previous meetings, as well as 17 of his last 20 matches.
• Second up is No. 7 seed Juan Monaco against No. 11 seed Mardy Fish; after missing two and a half months between April and June to deal with health issues, Fish has been gathering steam - last week he made his first ATP World Tour semi-final of the year at Washington DC; but Monaco - the ATP World Tour’s newest Top 10 player - has won the pair’s last three meetings, and though Fish won their first two meetings, he had to go a long way to do it (7-6 third set in best of three, 9-7 fifth set in best of five). Fish was runner-up in Montreal last year and he’s one of a tournament-high three Americans left.
• Next up is top seed and World No. 2 Novak Djokovic against American Sam Querrey, who has been rocketing up the South African Airways ATP Rankings as of late, reaching the semi-finals or better at ATP World Tour events three times in the last two months (including a title run at Los Angeles). But Djokovic has won all three of their previous meetings (more specifically, eight of the nine sets they’ve played) and although Querrey does have 10 career wins over Top 10 players, he has never beaten a Top 3 player (he is 0-8 against Top 3 players).
• At night, No. 2 seed Andy Murray faces No. 16 seed Milos Raonic. Murray is fresh off his most career title at the London Olympics and has always done well in Canada too, winning here twice - in 2009 and 2010. He will have a tough test against the home nation’s No. 1, though; Raonic has six Top 10 wins to his name (three this year), and although five of those came against World No. 9s and World No. 10s, the only one that came against a Top 8 player was over No. 4 Murray (in Barcelona in April).
• The other four third round matches are all on Grandstand, leading off with Spain’s Marcel Granollers and France’s Jeremy Chardy, who took out No. 3 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Wednesday. Next up is No. 4 seed Tomas Berdych and No. 14 seed Richard Gasquet, who leads that head-to-head series, 3-2). Third up is an all-veteran battle between the two oldest players left and in the Top 50 with Germany’s Tommy Haas, 34, and the Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek, 33. Stepanek took out No. 6 seed Juan Martin del Potro in the last round, Haas No. 9 seed Gilles Simon. Last on is No. 8 seed John Isner against No. 12 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber. Isner has won both previous meetings in three sets.
THE REMAINING FIELD --- There are 10 countries represented in the Round of 16 at the Rogers Cup. Here is the breakdown: United States 3, Czech Republic 2, France 2, Germany 2, Serbia 2, One Each: Argentina, Canada, Croatia, Great Britain and Spain. Note: Of the 16 players left, 12 are ranked in the Top 25 and the lowest-ranked player is No. 47 Jeremy Chardy.
