German Tommy Haas, the No. 8 seed, rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Russian Igor Andreev on Tuesday at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart. Andreev converted on his only break point in the first set, while Haas went 4 for 7 on his opportunities over the final two sets.

Haas is making his fourth appearance at this ATP World Tour 250 tournament, but first since 2000. He reached the final in 1999, and lost to Magnus Norman despite winning the first two sets of the best-of-five match.

“I’m excited to be back,” said the 34 year old. “My family is here. My daughter gets to see me play a little bit even though she won’t realise the fact that I’m actually out there playing. It’s good.

“I had a tough opponent today, Igor Andreev, who’s on his way back from injuries as well. I’m really happy about the fact that I got a victory over him on clay.”

Fellow German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe joined Haas in the second round, rebounding from a lacklustre second set to defeat seventh-seeded Pole Lukasz Kubot 6-2, 0-6, 6-3.

“In the second set, I started a bit nervous,” admitted Stebe, who looked ahead to improve in his next match against former champion Jeremy Chardy of France. “I just have to focus on my game. I just have to be calm, don’t be nervous and it should work out fine.

Chardy, who won his lone ATP World Tour title here in 2009, dismissed German qualifier Julian Reister 6-2, 6-4. “I feel very well on the court,” said the Frenchman. “I was confident. I played very aggressive. I started very well in the [match], I made a break in the first game, and after that I was more relaxed and I put pressure on him. It was a good success for me.”

Lukas Rosol, the man responsible for the biggest shock at Wimbledon when he ousted World No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the second round, defeated fifth-seeded Dutchman Robin Haase 6-4, 7-5 in 78 minutes, firing 12 aces and breaking serve twice.

The 26-year-old Rosol, who improved to a 14-14 match record on the season, goes onto face Germany’s Bjorn Phau, who beat Austrian qualifier Martin Fischer 6-3, 6-3 in 89 minutes.

Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci set a second-round clash with third-seeded Australian Bernard Tomic after finishing strongly to beat German wild card Robin Kern 7-6(3), 6-2.  Frenchman Benoit Paire posted a 7-6(5), 6-4 win over lucky loser Eduardo Schwank, who had replaced Philipp Petzschner in the draw when the German was forced to withdraw with a back injury.

Meanwhile, second seed Juan Monaco of Argentina learned that he will open against Tobias Kamke after the German defeated Italy’s Flavio Cipolla 6-3, 6-4.
