World No. 8 Gael Monfils came through his first-round match unscathed on Monday at Wimbledon, defeating Germany’s Matthias Bachinger 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-4.

The Frenchman, who has reached the third round three times at the All England Club, lost serve three times, but hit back by converting five of his 11 break point opportunities to claim victory one hour and 50 minutes.

“It's good to win a first match in a slam, especially on grass,” said Monfils, who came into Wimbledon after a semi-final showing in Halle. “It takes a little bit of time to feel really good on grass, so I'm happy to win in straight sets today.”

A second Frenchman advanced as No. 17 seed Richard Gasquet overcame Colombian Santiago Giraldo 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(3) in just over two hours. The 25-year-old Gasquet reached the Wimbledon semi-finals four years ago, losing out to Roger Federer.

Last year’s runner-up Tomas Berdych impressed in his opener, dropping just five games in a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Italy’s Filippo Volandri. The Czech player was dominant on serve, firing 12 aces as he made 88 per cent of first serves, and hit 32 winners to just eight from Volandri in the 94-minute rout.

World No. 7 Berdych reached his first major final at Wimbledon last year, defeating Federer in the quarter-finals and Novak Djokovic in the semis before his dream run came to an end against Rafael Nadal. The 25 year old has advanced to the quarter-finals or better at 10 events this season, and improved to a 30-13 match record.

Canadian Milos Raonic marked his Wimbledon debut with a 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over French lucky loser Marc Gicquel. The No. 31 seed struck 25 aces and 41 winners as he prevailed in 96 minutes. The 20-year-old Raonic made his breakthrough on the tour when he reached the Australian Open fourth round as a qualifier in January, and later won his first title in San Jose before finishing runner-up in Memphis.
